In our house the air freshener is made with water, baking soda and essential oil.
Our all purpose cleaner is made with vinegar, water, baking soda and essential oil.
The floor cleaner is made the same as the all purpose but with a slightly higher concentration of vinegar.
Windows are washed with a tiny bit of water and dried quickly with a clean towel and a bit of elbow grease.
Dusting is done with a wet cloth (maybe with some essential oils on it).
Counters are often wiped with our free & clear dish soap or the all purpose cleaner.
Tough jobs are covered in baking soda and dish soap, then spritzed with vinegar to bubble away anything yucky while I scrub.
Objects most people bleach, like dirty baby toys, I submerge in vinegar and extremely hot water.
I thought I was doing everything I could already to eliminate unnecessary chemicals from our house and just recently realized how wrong I was to think that. Over the weekend I went downstairs to throw a load of clothes into the washer, while pouring in my detergent I realized that I didn’t know what was in it. Again and again I tell people how our skin is our largest organ and here I am dumping concentrated chemicals onto my family’s clothes. And then after a chemical bath, they go into the dryer with nicely scented chemical sheets. Ugh! I was disgusted at my own ignorance. So I started researching homemade laundry detergents…
Of course, while I’m digging through articles of detergents with or without borax I come across dishwasher soap. At this point my own ignorance weighed a ton. So next I begin searching dishwasher soaps vs. dishwasher detergents and what the difference is.
My brain was a giant mush pile by the end of things but I came out with a couple of recipes that seem as if they are as safe as one can get. The laundry soap consists of only baking soda, washing soda and castille soap, however, I believe I will be adding essential oils to my mix.
As for dishwasher soap, I haven’t found anything that really rubs me the right way yet. Mostly lists of ingredients that call for borax (not interested) and a lot of forums with complaints about white films and streaks. As soon as I buy the ingredients I will update with full recipes, alterations and my reviews (with pictures).
ALSO, I will be making a batch of homemade baby wipes either today or tomorrow, so look forward to the step-by-step!
